A Brief History of Boys' Soccer at Cathedral High School
Boys' Soccer at Cathedral was initiated in the mid-1960's, shortly after the school had moved to East Forest Park. During the early years the teams were competitive, but did not earn any championships. The program was in a building stage. In 1965 they made it to Western Mass Finals, but lost to Ludlow in the Championship. In 1972 CHS broke through with a Western Mass Championship. A Cathedral legend, Francis "Hawk" Connery was the first coach and got the program off to a solid start.
In 1978 Joe Pantuosco, a 1967 graduate of Cathedral, returned to the school to coach the Boys' Soccer team. His brother John was one of the leaders of that team. Over the next 32 years Cathedral High School Soccer and Joe Pantuosco were nearly synonymous. There were 3 State Championships, 3 State Runners-Up, 12 Western Mass Championships and more than 420 wins.
The rosters of Cathedral's soccer teams were filled with a long list of brothers, one after the other, who helped build those great teams. In the late-70's it was the Pantuosco brothers, John and Louis. In the late 1980's it was the Lessard's (Joe, Scott and Dan) and the Christian's (Jamie, Chris and Tim)). In the 1990's it was the Kelly's(Ryan, Paul and Patrick) and the Klatka's (Christopher, Andrew and Tim). And over the past few seasons it has been Orszulak's (Chris, Justin and Daniel), and Reynold's (Brendan and Conor). In the 32 seasons Coach P trained more than 300 scholar athletes, six of who were named All-Americans. They were Paul Stelzer ('73), Art Podgorski ('81), Jamie('89) and Tim ('94) Chistian, Ryan Kelly ('97) and Stefan McVeigh (2004).
