2010 Varsity Schedule A Brief History of Cross Country at Cathedral Cross Country was initiated at Cathedral in the early 1960's, and under the leadership of Paul Whitlock the team developed quickly to become a powerhouse in Western Mass. Teams in the late 1960's and early 1970's were perrenial contenders in Western Mass, and Ric Bourie (CHS '72) was a Massachusetts State Champion and New England Champion in his senior campaign. Since the 1970's the team has been coached by Dan Walsh (CHS '73). Dan has developed a long list of good runners, but he has been most influential in developing young men of character and sportsmanship. One of the best examples of this was the team approach to John Southworth (CHS 2010). John was a down-syndrome student who ran cross-country all four years, and while he often did not finish, it was Coach Walsh's leadership that got the team to be there for John so that each season he completed a race. In fact their example got some of their opponents to go out and cheer John on to the finish line!
