Religious Studies Department
Curriculum
The four years of Religious Studies encompass the following
areas:
- Religion 1 A course on Catholic Christianity with
an emphasis on morality and the virtues.
- Religion 2 A course on Jesus with an emphasis on the Christian Scriptures.
- Religion 3 A course on Social Justice as viewed from Sacred Scripture and the teachings of the Catholic Church.
- World Religions This course covers the major religions of Hinduism, Buddhism, Confucianism, Taoism, Shintoism, Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
The students at CHS are required to take all four years of Religious
Studies.
Service Education
Freshman Year:
The students are required to have a service journal, which contains their
monthly activities of service plus what they have learned about service
from newspaper articles, magazines and from Sacred Scripture. Freshmen
are asked to complete eight hours of service.
Sophomore
Year
The students are focused on three areas of service: the school community,
the local community, and the world community. Twelve hours of service
are required along with a reflection paper.
Junior
Year
The students are encouraged to engage in sixteen hours of service. The
final project is a reflection paper, a critical analysis of their experiences.
Senior Year
The students are encouraged to engage in twenty-four hours of
service along with a reflection paper. The students can participate in the local soup kitchen, various fund-raisers, walks, parish events, local community needs, and other suitable activities. |
