  Social Studies Goals   capital

The goals of the Social Studies Department are as follows:

To acquire, organize, analyze and interpret historical documents and sources and to recognize the value of historical research.

To develop and maintain good writing techniques, which may be used in responding to essay questions, and other forms of writing, including historical fiction.

To be able to think critically and logically and to support generalizations with sound conclusive evidence.

To recognize the skills of problem-solving and conflict resolution, particularly in examining war through history and subsequent peace treaty attempts.

To be able to achieve good communication skills, present sound oral arguments, and literally be able to think independently.

To construct a historical viewpoint that enables one to recognize and explore contemporary issues from their underlying reoccurring theme and to appreciate other viewpoints that emerge from the study of history.

To develop and demonstrate responsible attitudes toward oneself, one's community and the world. Through the study of past events, situations and circumstances, students will become familiar with the contributions made by their historical predecessors and how these contributions impacted society on both a national and/or international level.

To construct an all inclusive, global perspective, which includes knowledge of cultures and commitment to work towards justice throughout the world community.

To develop a pluralistic perspective based on diversity and respect of all opinions, races, religions, genders, classes and cultures.

To demonstrate, apply, and understand critical values fundamental to the Gospels in a democratic society.

To become participating citizens in studying the mechanics of government with the goal of becoming practicing voters. Students will be exposed to the issues connected to each election and will be able to make sound, informed political decisions.

To be able to discern the best research and sources surrounding a particular topic, issue or event of history.

To provide for student success in the academics, the Social Studies Department offers a variety of assessments to promote student proficiency.
