Jack Hoar Memorial Hockey Game

On February 2, 2008, a cloudy winter day, the light shined brightly upon 45 Cathedral Hockey Alum for the first annual Jack Hoar Memorial Hockey Game. The game was held at the Olympia Ice Center, prior to the jayvee and varsity game vs. Hingham. The 45 alums participating ranged from senior member Dave Keaney, Class of 1957, to Tyler Gates & Joe Scavatto, Class of 2007,and included three former Bessone winners: Paul Fenton (‘77), Tom Nolan (‘64) and Pat Moriarty (’91). Honorary coaches were Bill Fallon, Class of ’66 and Mike O’Malley, Class of ‘67.

The game ended in a 6 – 6 tie, but the score was irrelevant. The bantering on and off the ice was worth the price of admission, with so many alums renewing the old friendships that has made Cathedral hockey such a great tradition.
That tradition was one of the most important aspects of CHS hockey to Jack Hoar, and how fitting it was to name the event in his memory, a man who played and supported the program for over forty years till his passing in November 2006.

The game was just a prelude to a wonderful dinner that the Hockey Boosters and the Hoar family organized, with more then 300 people attending and $6,000 to support the Cathedral team. The entertainment was provided by two CHS alums, Bo Fitzgerald and Steve Moore, and included a spectacular raffle, which featured an autographed Milwaukee Brewers game jersey from CHS grad Chris Capuano.

Jack Hoar’s wife Patty, his daughters Kate and Colleen and his sons John and Brian announced that, in addition to the monies raised by the game, the family would be awarding its own college scholarship to a deserving CHS hockey player at this year’s hockey banquet in the spring.

On behalf of the entire Cathedral family, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to the Hoar family for allowing us to memorialize Jack Hoar, a man who cared so much for his family, his friends, his community, Cathedral High School and its rich hockey tradition.
