Theme for the 2009-2010 Academic Year

Build Up

“You will receive power when the holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses...” (Acts 1:8)

Each school year, Cathedral High School has a theme, a focus for the Cathedral faith community to look at more deeply and apply to their lives.

This year’s theme is WITNESS.  A witness is someone who can give a firsthand account of something seen, heard, or experienced.  To witness means to be present at something, to testify.  This call to witness was given to us by Jesus before he left this world, that we were given the task to spread the message of the Gospel to everyone we meet.

The saints are great examples of witnesses to the faith.  They showed by the way they lived their life (or by the way they died) how to give testimony to Jesus and his message in our world.  In fact, the word martyr (which we use to describe someone who died for their faith) derives from a Greek word meaning “witness”.

How do you witness to your faith? A question we should all ask, as Catholic Christians, is: Do my words and actions point other people to Jesus?  If the answer is yes, how can I better spread His message in our Cathedral community?  If no, what can I do differently this year to be a better witness to the Gospel?  Realize that when we include the Holy Spirit in the equation of our lives, all things are possible (Lk 1:37)!
